๐Ÿ“˜ Pro guide: mixes by surface

Read first: This is a summary of common industry guidance for learning only. It is not training and not a recipe to copy. Products and surfaces vary. Always follow the chemical label and SDS and the surface maker's instructions, test a hidden spot, wear eye and skin protection, and follow local rules on runoff. % = bleach (sodium hypochlorite) strength on the surface after mixing, not the jug strength (pro jugs are usually 10โ€“12.5%).

Always

Wet plants and grass before, keep them wet, rinse after. Don't let any mix dry on the surface. Add chemical to water, never water to concentrate. Never mix bleach with acids or ammonia. Use a separate step and rinse between products. Never use a red 0ยฐ tip.

Vinyl / aluminum siding

Soft wash, about 1โ€“1.5% bleach + surfactant, dwell 5โ€“10 min, rinse at low pressure top-down. No high pressure into the laps.

Painted wood siding, stucco / EIFS

Gentler: about 0.5โ€“1%, test first, very low pressure. EIFS is easy to damage with pressure.

Asphalt shingle roof

ARMA (shingle makers): 50/50 household bleach and water (works out to roughly 2โ€“3%), dwell 15โ€“20 min, rinse with low pressure. Never pressure wash or scrub shingles because the granules come off. Many pros run 3โ€“6% on heavy growth; check the shingle maker.

Metal roof

Depends on the finish. Coil-coating makers list about 1.25% for factory-painted steel; bare Galvalume/galvanized much lower or none. Some makers say no bleach and no pressure. Check the maker's sheet.

Concrete / block

Match the stain: degreaser for oil (Dawn for light grease), bleach mix around 3โ€“4% for mildew and algae, degreaser then bleach (separate steps) for both. Surface cleaner is the go-to; turbo tip OK on hard spots; never 0ยฐ.

Brick

About 1โ€“3%, low to moderate pressure, go easy on mortar joints. Test for color fade.

Wood decks & fences

Sodium metasilicate wood cleaner (label rate, often 4โ€“8 oz per gallon), keep wet 5โ€“25 min, rinse low pressure, then oxalic acid brightener (often 4โ€“8 oz per gallon) to neutralize and restore color. If you use bleach on wood, keep it weak (about 0.5โ€“1%).

Oxidation (chalky siding, gutter tiger stripes)

Not mildew, so bleach won't fix it. Wipe test, use a cleaner made for oxidation per its label, short dwell, soft brush, low-pressure rinse. No pressure washing. Severe chalking may not fully come back.
